Voids in Materials

From Unavoidable Defects to Designed Cellular Materials

Elsevier, 2014.

ISBNs 9780444563675

Colección: ScienceDirect

Resumen (en inglés):

Voids in Materials treats voids of different shapes and forms in various materials, and examines their effects on material properties. The book covers the origins of voids in materials, how they are sometimes introduced in the form of hollow spheres, and the resultant properties of materials containing voids.

There are many books that focus on foams (which intentionally incorporate voids into materials) and that cover voids incidental to or unwanted in the fabrication of non-porous materials. In fact, all materials have voids. This book starts from the premise that voids are pervasive in all material on some level. It goes beyond foams to provide a comprehensive overview of voids, a central reference for scientists and engineers to use for the effect of voids in materials.

  • Includes 3D renderings of void geometries
  • Explains how and why voids are introduced into materials across the length scales; from nanometer-scale voids up to macro-scale voids
  • Provides a continuous picture of how material properties change as the volume fraction of voids increases, and the implications for product design

Water Reclamation and Sustainability

Elsevier, 2014.

ISBNs 9780124116450

Colección: ScienceDirect

Resumen (en inglés):

Many hydrological, geochemical, and biological processes associated with water reclamation and reuse are poorly understood. In particular, the occurrence and effects of trace organic and inorganic contaminants commonly found in reclaimed water necessitates careful analysis and treatment prior to safe reuse. Water Reclamation and Sustainability is a practical guide to the latest water reclamation, recycling, and reuse theory and practice. From water quality criteria and regulations to advanced techniques and implementation issues, this book offers scientists a toolkit for developing safe and successful reuse strategies. With a focus on specific contaminant removal techniques, this book comprehensively covers the full range of potential inorganic/organic contaminating compounds and highlights proven remediation methods. Socioeconomic implications related to current and future water shortages are also addressed, underscoring the many positive benefits of sustainable water resource management.

  • Offers pragmatic solutions to global water shortages
  • Provides an overview of the latest analytical techniques for water monitoring
  • Reviews current remediation efforts
  • Covers innovative technologies for green, gray, brown and black water reclamation and reuse

Wood Coatings

Theory and practice

Elsevier, 2009.

ISBNs 9780444528407

Colección: ScienceDirect

Resumen (en inglés): Wood Coatings addresses the factors responsible for the performance of wood coatings in both domestic and industrial situations. The term 'wood coatings' covers a broad range of products including stains, varnishes, paints and supporting ancillary products that may be used indoors or outdoors.
Techniques for coating wood go back many centuries but in recent decades there has been a move towards more environmentally-friendly materials, for example, the use of water-borne rather than solvent-borne chemicals.
A major objective of Wood Coatings is to explain the underlying factors that influence selection, application and general operational issues. Basic information on the chemistry and technology of coatings is included for the benefit of students and laboratory technicians. Additionally, the book includes individual chapters of interest to architects, specifiers, and industrial users.

* Offers up-to-date guidance on current availability and usage of wood coatings
* Provides the reader with a basic understanding of both coating and substrate interactions
* Covers both architectural (trade and DIY) and industrial sectors

Writing Reaction Mechanisms in Organic Chemistry

3rd ed. Academic Press, 2015.

ISBNs 9780124114753

Colección: ScienceDirect

Resumen (en inglés):

Writing Reaction Mechanisms in Organic Chemistry, Third Edition is an invaluable guide to understanding the movements of atoms and electrons in the reactions of organic molecules. Expanding on the successful book by Miller and Solomon, this new edition further enhances your understanding of reactions. The whole book has been extensively revised with new material including a completely new chapter. To further aid understanding, all illustrations have been redrawn with the use of color to clearly indicate how each reaction works. This book illustrates that understanding organic reactions is based on applying general principles rather than memorizing unrelated processes. This approach helps you understand that writing mechanisms is a practical method of applying knowledge of previously encountered reactions and reaction conditions to new reactions. After simply explaining basic principles, this book then examines each type of reaction. A clear background and explanation is provided for each reaction, followed by an example of the reaction in use. At the end of each section is a series of problems, with a wider range of challenging questions, to test your understanding of the mechanism, with answers to check that you are right. Students and research chemists alike will find this revised book useful to organize what may seem an overwhelming quantity of information into a set of simple general principles and guidelines for determining and describing organic reaction mechanisms.

  • Extensively rewritten and reorganized with a completely new chapter on oxidation and reduction reactions including stereochemical reactions
  • Essential for those who need to have mechanisms explained in greater detail than most organic chemistry textbooks provide
  • Now illustrated with hundreds of colorful chemical structures to help you understand reaction processes more easily
  • New and extended problem sets and answers to help you understand the general principles and how to apply this to real applications
  • New information boxes throughout the text to provide useful background to reactions and the people behind the discovery of a reaction
