Resumen (en inglés): As the Century of Biology begins to bear fruit, through the translation of predictive biological understanding into applications that enhance the human condition and maintain biodiversity, the almost infinite potential of marine biological resources will be unlocked. Although Marine Biotechnology already has delivered products for medicine, food, bioenergy, nanomaterials, and bioremediation, less than 5% of our vast oceanic environment has been explored. Marine Biotechnology is a scientifically and economically expanding enterprise that is poised to harness the enormous but uncharted functional diversity of marine life, with its novel and rich array biodesigns and biosynthetic capabilities. From this pursuit comes new genes, chemicals, materials and inspirations for the benefit of industry, nutrition, medicine and the sustainable use and management of the world’s oceans. This Special Issue in Marine Drugs highlights the cutting-edge developments in Marine Biotechnology with a collection of papers written by authors who are leading experts in the field including selected papers from the 10th International Marine Biotechnology Conference (IMBC-2013), the premier meeting in marine biotechnology under the auspices of the International Marine Biotechnology Association. We cordially welcome you to join us in this endeavor. The submission of comprehensive/mini reviews, original research articles and communications is most welcome.

Resumen (en inglés): Over the last decades, the study of extremophiles has providing ground breaking discoveries that challenge the paradigms of modern biology and make us rethink intriguing questions such as “what is life?”, “what are the limits of life?”, and “what are the fundamental features of life?”. The mechanisms by which different microorganisms adapt to extreme environments provide a unique perspective on the fundamental characteristics of biological processes present in most species. Extremophiles are also critical for evolutionary studies related to the origins of life, since they form a cluster on the base of the tree of life. Furthermore, the application of extremophiles in industrial processes has opened a new era in biotechnology. The study of extreme environments has become a key area of research for astrobiology. Extremophiles may help us understand what form life takes on other planetary bodies in our own solar system and beyond. These findings and possibilities have made the study of life in extreme environments one of the most exciting areas of research in recent decades. However, despite the latest advances we are just in the beginning of exploring and characterizing the world of extremophiles. This special issue covers all aspects of life in extreme environments.   • La presente obra de carácter didáctico ofrece los conocimientos básicos y aplicados que permiten al médico establecer para sus pacientes una "medicina personalizada" basada en las aportaciones derivadas de la secuenciación completa del genoma humano del Human Genome Project.
  • El libro tiene una triple función: en primer lugar, pretende informar a los médicos acerca de las nuevas posibilidades de diagnóstico y pronóstico de enfermedades que han surgido como consecuencia del conocimiento del genoma humano; en segundo lugar, se propone recordar los conocimientos básicos de genética y actualizarlos con rigor científico, pero de forma comprensible para no especialistas; y por último, se plantea motivar al lector a aplicar estos nuevos conocimientos para mejorar el nivel asistencial de sus pacientes.
  • En términos generales, los médicos carecen de conocimientos sólidos acerca de las aplicaciones prácticas que se derivan de la secuenciación del genoma humano, pues éste se descifró en el año 2003 y sólo a partir de 2005 se empezó a publicar aplicaciones prácticas con un adecuado nivel de solvencia.
  • La secuenciación del genoma humano supone el final de uno de los proyectos de la investigación biológica más importantes de la historia, así como la puerta que ha abierto nuevos horizontes de conocimiento muy especialmente aplicados a la prevención, detección, orientación terapéutica y pronóstico del cáncer, que junto con el grupo de enfermedades cardiovasculares, forma parte de las causas más importantes de mortalidad en el primer mundo.
  • A lo largo de los diez capítulos de la obra, el autor muestra de qué forma el conocimiento de determinados SNP (Single Nucleotide Polimorphisms) de los pacientes puede ayudar a establecer unas pautas de medicina predictiva como base para una medicina personalizada.
  • En contra del lenguaje excesivamente técnico de las publicaciones (en su mayoría temas puntuales de grupos de investigación) existentes sobre el tema, esta obra dedica un capítulo a revisar conceptos básicos de genética que permiten entender el significado clínico derivado de mutaciones SNP, empleando un lenguaje sencillo y asequible.
  • Obra dirigida a todos los médicos en ejercicio, dado que todas las especialidades médicas son potencialmente beneficiarias de los nuevos conocimientos del genoma.

Resumen (en inglés): Proteomics, the high-throughput “omic” technique has validated its role in precise identification and characterization of individual components of plant protein networks. A comprehensive understanding of plant response mechanism is essential to elucidate the key factors affecting plant performance under adverse conditions. Various proteomic approaches that are being exploited extensively for elucidating plant response largely include gel-based and mass spectrometry-based methods that involve both label-based and label-free protein quantification. Despite of limitations in identifying low-abundance and hydrophobic proteins, exceedingly large or small proteins, as well as basic proteins, gel-based method has been accepted as a global tool to unravel the underlying molecular mechanism of stress signal perception and transduction in plant defense responses. Moreover, recent advances in the mass spectrometry-based approaches provide a better opportunity to dissect stress signaling cascades. Nevertheless, complete protein extraction from different plant organs or subcellular organelles is the most challenging facet of plant proteome analysis. Furthermore, protein-protein interactions and post-translational modifications provide deeper insight into protein molecular function. We welcome submissions of original research papers and review articles addressing recent advancements as well as strengths and shortcomings of various proteomic approaches and diverse applications of plant proteomic techniques to get new insights of plant molecular responses to various biotic and abiotic challenges.
