Resumen (en alemán): Es sei allerlei für die Nationalbibliothek zu ergattern, meinte Generaldirektor Paul Heigl im Jänner 1944 in einem Brief an einen Kollegen. So lässt sich der umfangreiche Bücherraub, der die Geschichte der Nationalbibliothek in Wien zwischen 1938 und 1945 prägte, in wenigen Worten umreißen. Die größte wissenschaftliche Bibliothek in Österreich und nach dem "Anschluss" im März 1938 drittgrößte im Deutschen Reich nutzte ihre dominierende Stellung in der Bibliothekslandschaft, um ihre Bestände mit Raubgut zu vermehren. Durch die Person des 1938 eingesetzten Generaldirektors und engagierten Nationalsozialisten Paul Heigl, durch seine vielen Verbindungen zum NS-Staat, gelangten im Zeitraum 1938 bis 1945 bis zu einer halben Million geraubte Bücher in die Bibliothek am Josefsplatz. Nach jahrzehntelangem Verschweigen der eigenen NS-Geschichte in offiziellen Bibliothekspublikationen wird hier erstmals die aktive Rolle geschildert, die die Bibliothek bei unrechtmäßigen Erwerbungen spielte. Der Bücherraub privater und institutioneller Bibliotheken im In- und Ausland kann dank des umfangreichen ÖNB-Archivs ausführlich dargestellt werden. Darüber hinaus werden die Bemühungen der Nationalbibliothek - sowohl in den Nachkriegsjahren als auch in jüngster Zeit - um die Ausforschung und die Restitution von geraubten Objekten dokumentiert. Diese Geschichte will aber nicht nur auf unrechtmäßige Zugänge fokussieren, sondern auch den Versuch unternehmen, den Alltag in der Bibliothek in der NS-Zeit einzufangen. Sie versteht sich als Beitrag zur bislang kaum behandelten Geschichte des Bibliothekswesens in Österreich in den Jahren 1938 bis 1945 und spiegelt gleichzeitig auch die politische Geschichte Österreichs im 20. Jahrhundert wider.
