Resumen (en inglés): As the Century of Biology begins to bear fruit, through the translation of predictive biological understanding into applications that enhance the human condition and maintain biodiversity, the almost infinite potential of marine biological resources will be unlocked. Although Marine Biotechnology already has delivered products for medicine, food, bioenergy, nanomaterials, and bioremediation, less than 5% of our vast oceanic environment has been explored. Marine Biotechnology is a scientifically and economically expanding enterprise that is poised to harness the enormous but uncharted functional diversity of marine life, with its novel and rich array biodesigns and biosynthetic capabilities. From this pursuit comes new genes, chemicals, materials and inspirations for the benefit of industry, nutrition, medicine and the sustainable use and management of the world’s oceans. This Special Issue in Marine Drugs highlights the cutting-edge developments in Marine Biotechnology with a collection of papers written by authors who are leading experts in the field including selected papers from the 10th International Marine Biotechnology Conference (IMBC-2013), the premier meeting in marine biotechnology under the auspices of the International Marine Biotechnology Association. We cordially welcome you to join us in this endeavor. The submission of comprehensive/mini reviews, original research articles and communications is most welcome.

Biorefineries are an essential technology in converting biomass into biofuels or other useful materials. Advances in Biorefineries provides a comprehensive overview of biorefining processing techniques and technologies, and the biofuels and other materials produced.

Part one focuses on methods of optimizing the biorefining process and assessing its environmental and economic impact. It also looks at current and developing technologies for producing value-added materials. Part two goes on to explore these materials with a focus on biofuels and other value-added products. Resumen (en inglés): Microbial biofilms have been implicated in a large number of acute and chronic infections, as well as in the failure of antibiotic treatment, particularly in hospitalized patients. In fact, the well-known persistence in the nosocomial environment of multidrug resistant microorganisms is believed to be highly promoted by the ability of the great majority of the involved bacterial and fungal species to adhere on living or abiotic surfaces, and to grow in sessile mode, to form single- or multi-species biofilms. In these communities, microbes grow encased in a hydrated matrix of extracellular polymeric substances produced by themselves and are well protected from the host immune response and the attack of antimicrobial molecules. Thus, the establishment of microbial biofilm communities on the mucosal and soft tissues of hospitalized patients, as well as on the surfaces of indwelling devices and medical instruments, is expected to have a great influence on the success of the antibiotic therapies against most of the bugs involved in nosocomial infections, being biofilm-growing bacteria and fungi much less susceptible to antibiotics.

Resumen (en inglés): The implementation of label-free sensing of biological and chemical agents allows one to investigate the underlying physical and chemical characteristics and interactions target analytes while reducing both sample complexity and preparation time. Sensor platforms incorporating label-free detection schemes avoid the potentially confounding effects of molecular labels by monitoring the target species directly, relying solely on the intrinsic physicochemical properties of the target analyte. Because of the relatively minimal sample preparation, such approaches are well suited for field applications and remote diagnostics where either sample preparation facilities and/or trained personnel may be limited or unavailable.
