Advances in Food-producing Systems for Arid and Semiarid Lands, Part A

Academic Press, 1981.

ISBNs 9780124673212

Colección: ScienceDirect

Resumen (en inglés): Advances in Food-Producing Systems for Arid and Semiarid Lands: Part A contains the proceedings of a symposium on ""Advances in Food-Producing Systems for Arid and Semiarid Lands"" of the International Symposium Series held in Kuwait in April 1980.
Organized into five parts, separating the first five sessions of the symposium, this book begins by discussing the needs of arid lands. It then tackles the biotechnologies that may find valuable applications in arid and semiarid lands. Furthermore, it explores the water management and environmental tolerance aspects involved in these harsh environments.
The presented papers bring renewed vitality to the hope that appropriate and directed exploitation of various technologies can evolve developable industries for arid and semiarid lands.

Resumen (en inglés): Advances in Food-Producing Systems for Arid and Semiarid Lands: Part B contains the proceedings of a symposium on ""Advances in Food-Producing Systems for Arid and Semiarid Lands"" of the International Symposium Series held in Kuwait in April 1980.
As a continuation of the proceedings, this compilation contains the last three parts of the symposium and the editor's closing remarks. It specifically talks about the innovative food systems and aquacultural systems in the arid and semi-arid lands. It also addresses the general problems of post-harvest losses in food of plant origin and the possibilities to reduce these losses.
The presented papers bring renewed vitality to the hope that appropriate and directed exploitation of various technologies can evolve developable industries for arid and semiarid lands.

Advances in Microbial Food Safety

Vol. 2

Woodhead Publishing, 2015.

ISBNs 9781782421078

Colección: ScienceDirect

Resumen (en inglés): Research and legislation in food microbiology continue to evolve, and outbreaks of foodborne disease place further pressure on the industry to provide microbiologically safe products. This second volume in the series Advances in Microbial Food Safety summarises major recent advances in this field, and complements volume 1 to provide an essential overview of developments in food microbiology. Part one opens the book with an interview with a food safety expert. Part two provides updates on single pathogens, and part three looks at pathogen detection, identification and surveillance. Part four covers pathogen control and food preservation. Finally, part five focuses on pathogen control management.

  • Extends the breadth and coverage of the first volume in the series
  • Includes updates on specific pathogens and safety for specific foods
  • Reviews both detection and management of foodborne pathogens

Aerobiology

Academic Press, 1970.

ISBNs 9780126435504

Colección: ScienceDirect

Resumen (en inglés): Aerobiology documents the proceedings of the Third International Symposium held at the University of Sussex, England, in September 1969. The book is organized into three chapters that correspond to the three sessions held during the symposium. These three sessions dealt with themes of airborne infections in closed and segregated environments; the value and use of germ-free environments; and physiological and genetic factors in host resistance.
Examples of the contributions during these sessions included studies on the transmission of meningococci among Army recruits; the transfer and acquisition of micro-organisms between and by patients nursed in a uni-directionally ventilated environment and those in an open ward; and the association between blood group status and susceptibility to certain virus infections. The symposium also included seminars that focused on the following themes: intramural spread of infection; laboratory safety; the immunological aspects of pathogenesis; vaccines and vaccination methods; microbial survival in air; rapid diagnosis; techniques in aerobiology; and the ways in which airborne particles cause infection.

Aflatoxin

Scientific Background, Control, and Implications

Academic Press, 1969.

ISBNs 9780123955135

Colección: ScienceDirect

Resumen (en inglés): Aflatoxin: Scientific Background, Control, and Implications discusses general problems posed by mycotoxin contamination in foods and feeds. This book is divided into 15 chapters that summarize the discovery, elaboration, chemistry and assay, effects and metabolic fate, processing to ensure their removal or inactivation, and regulatory aspects of aflatoxins.
The introductory chapters cover the discovery, formation by Aspergillus flavus, and the chemistry and structure of aflatoxins. The subsequent chapters describe the physicochemical and biological assays for aflatoxin measurement, detection, and analysis. A chapter also describes the metabolic fate and the biochemical alterations associated with aflatoxin administration to animals and other biological test systems. Discussions on the acute toxicity and carcinogenic activity of aflatoxins in laboratory and farm animals are also provided, with emphasis on the recognition of aflatoxicosis, a disease condition caused by the action of the aflatoxin poison. The book goes on examining the role of spoilage molds in destroying stored crops and the tremendous capacity for toxin production of aflatoxins. It also describes successful efforts of food and feed industries to ensure a wholesome food supply, including the utilization of various detoxification processes. The last chapters deal with the regulatory provisions for aflatoxin contamination control and tolerances and the implications of fungal toxins to human health.
The book is intended for scientists and manufacturers concerned with the production and processing of foods and feeds, the nutrition, and the animal and public health.
